Academic Advising
The College of Mass Communication and Media Arts offers decentralized academic advising for its students. Each academic unit has its own adviser, who meets regularly with students throughout their academic career. Refer to the New Student Handbook (pages 1 and 2) for more information about academic advisement in the College.
Academic Emphasis Floors
Student Services also oversees the College’s three academic emphasis floors in the residence halls, This specialized living arrangement offers MCMA students an environment in which to live, study and socialize together. The academic emphasis floors also provide an opportunity for students to receive the necessary resources and support form the College first-hand. A student resident assistant (SRA) is assigned to each floor and College faculty and staff serve as associates. Various events and activities are planned to bring together the floors’ residents, the SRA, faculty and staff associates, and guests throughout the academic year.
New Student Orientation Picnic
The New Student Orientation Picnic, held each fall semester during the first week of classes, offers incoming freshmen and transfer students the opportunity to meet with faculty, staff and student representatives from the College of Mass Communication and Media Arts. On hand are peer advisers, the dean, the chairs and directors of each unit, academic advisers, faculty, staff and other students in the major programs of study. Representatives from more than a dozen Registered Student Organizations (RSOs) staff tables and provide information about their organizations. From joining the American Advertising Federation to signing up for auditions with WSIU-TV and WSIU-FM, students learn about the many opportunities to get involved. In this fun and informal setting, students also enjoy free food, giveaways and music and meet other new students in the College.
Peer Advisors
The Peer Advisor Program is one example of support that Student Services offers. The peer advisors help new students make smooth academic and social transitions to university life. Approximately 50 sophomores, juniors and seniors majoring in Cinema & Photography, Journalism and Radio-Television serve as peer advisors. Assigned to a group of incoming students, they help new students become aware of College activities and organizations and encourage student participation.
Student Ambassadors
In the Ambassador Program our best and brightest students speak one-on-one with high school and transfer students about MCMA programs and Southern Illinois University Carbondale. They talk about their own experiences and share some insight into what life at SIUC is really like.
