alt.news is a student produced magazine-style show that prides itself on being innovative, informative, and above all, entertaining. We push ourselves to utilize the cutting edge of television technology to present stories that you don't find on your typical newscast. Students do everything from the initial concept to the final air copy of a show, encompassing all facets of television production from shooting and editing to writing and advertising. In recent years, alt.news has been nationally recognized with multiple Emmy awards and has even gone on to be broadcast in larger markets. Students from fields of study are appreciated.

The SIUC chapter of the American Advertising Federation is a part of a worldwide organization of advertising clubs. A major function of AAF is to work on an advertising campaign that is entered in the national AAF campaigns competition, and to travel to compete against other schools. Students also invite guest speakers, hold social events and help raise funds. Campaigns include market research, media planning, production of magazine, direct mail, radio, and TV ads. All majors are welcome.

NABJ meets weekly in the Communications Building. It sponsors speakers, workshops, field trips, social events, and partakes in service projects. NABJ is the largest association of journalists of color in the world and has professional chapters throughout the United States. It offers a series of internship and scholarship opportunities.

The SIUC chapter of AWC is part of a national organization, devoted to the professional advancement of students in all communication disciplines. With bi-weekly meetings, members participate in professional workshops, networking opportunities including building and maintaining relationships with students and faculty, community service and event planning. Members are not limited to mass communication students; all students are encouraged to join.

The Saluki Advertising Agency is a full-service, student run agency. SAA provides advertising and integrated marketing communication services to local businesses, on-campus departments and other RSOs. SCJ is an organization that assists students and professionals in journalism--in areas of ethics, freedom of information and diversity. Above all, it is an excellent networking opportunity for its members. The Southern Illinois University SCJ chapter is responsible for printing the School of Journalism alumni publication, The Southern Journalist, which finds itself on the desks of employees of the Miami Herald, St. Louis Post Dispatch, the Washington Post, and others. Also, the organization completes a variety of projects dealing with the principles upon which SCJ was founded.

The first student group affiliated with the Illinois News Broadcasters Association, SINBA brings together students with career interests in broadcast journalism. The local chapter hosts professional news, weather, and sports broadcasters to attend regular meetings. Members work on various projects on behalf of the parent INBA organization and attend two statewide conventions each year. In 1989, the SIUC chapter initiated a statewide student news award competition. The chapter also holds an annual alumni conference, inviting former Salukis in the news business to participate in seminars and critique sessions.

The Daily Egyptian is the daily, student-run campus newspaper. Paid student positions are available in the business, advertising, production, printing, news reporting and photography areas. The campus radio station WIDB is operated and managed by students. WIDB broadcasts 24 hours a day from the SIUC student center to campus residence halls and the Student Center. WIDB offers students practical experience in radio hosting and producing, programming, engineering, news, sportscasting, music review, promotion, public relations, production and commercial sales. The WSIU-TV (PBS) production crew works in all facets of television production from putting up sets and lighting to running cameras, graphics, audio and directing Programs range from news, sports and public affairs to music, drama, a quiz show (Scholastic Hi-Q), PBS pledge drives, multi-camera remote productions and other shows including various documentary productions. The crew consists entirely of student volunteers. No experience is necessary because training is provided. This is a great way to get hands on television production experience at a licensed PBS affiliate.

WSIU Television News produces a variety of live and pre-recorded news, public affairs, and sports content on the PBS station serving the lower third of Illinois. The River Region Evening Edition is a live, half-hour news broadcast that includes sports, weather, and long-term features. It airs Monday through Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. SIU Sportsview airs a half-dozen times a year and focuses on Saluki Sports. Students produce all programs under the supervision of a broadcast professional and Radio-TV faculty members. volunteers are welcome but need a schedule with large, uninterrupted blocks of time in the afternoon. Volunteers also take a General Knowledge & Current Events quiz to demonstrate a general awareness of news and issues. Students from any University program may volunteer. WSIU Television News enjoys a strong national reputation. In 2004, WSIU TV News received a third place in the national student news competition through the Broadcast Educators Association; two first place honors in the Illinois News Broadcast Association student news competition and individual students won numerous awards including four INBA Scholarships. This is the tenth year for WSIU Television News. Saluki broadcast news graduates from an incredible network of contacts with deep loyalty to the program andits graduates.

The WSIU Public Broadcasting promotions department provides graphic design and promotion experience. Student employees design and customize print ads; design posters, flyers, postcards, display items, brochures, scan and adjust images; and more. Students also do research and write copy for WSIU's TV and FM program guides (including conducting interviews for special feature); prepare press releases, media advisories, and PSA scripts; assist with database management; and take photos during local productions and station events. Programs used include Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Powerpoint. Federal Work Study is usually required. Students are expected to work during breaks and summer session, when possible. Paid positions: 3 (average)

The TV Programming and On-Air Promotions office at WSIU/WUSI-TV has various paid and unpaid opportunities for students. A paid student programming assistant helps prepare the monthly TV program listings for media distribution, compiles ratings statistics from Nielsen reports, and assists viewers who call for information about programming including tracking their calls in a database. A paid student promotions assistant is responsible for scripting and recording voiceovers for various primetime programming, pledge, community dateline and other special announcements as needed. This student is also responsible for organizing student volunteers to regularly record voiceovers for air in primetime, which includes contacting the applicants, auditioning them, and working out a schedule. Volunteers are needed for recording voiceovers on a regular basis each week.
